Black & White Winter Layers | The Art Of Rest

Black & White Winter Layers | The Art Of Rest

Winter is by far my favorite season. I love being cold and finding warmth in the layers of my clothes. I adore wearing coats. I adore wearing layers and I just enjoy feeling bundled up to face a Winter day! I love the feeling the cold, crisp air on my cheeks. I love to feel my feet being cold and adding a pair of fuzzy socks and feeling the warmth and cozy fabric on my toes as I sit by a fire and drink a piping hot chamomile-honey tea. To me, there is nothing better than hot soup on a rainy day and lots of blankets available on the sofa for all to get warm as they lounge about the house.

I think the reason why I truly love winter is that I’m a tightly wound, hard-working, go-go-go-go, type of personality. A-type, if you will. It’s been through years of doing the same old thing and getting exhausted and burnt out time and time again that I’ve come to learn the art of allowing Winter for my soul. Leaning into a season where nothing really bears fruit. There are no signs of production but everything just seems to be done.

There’s a pause in Winter.

The days even get shorter to make us more sleepy; less productive. I used to feel so uncomfortable when it came to rest, taking a nap, making time for no errands to run, or no to-do lists to check off. Resting felt wrong to me because I believed my worth was in my production. If I could just one more thing I would feel like I finally measured up. Well, Winter is a big reminder for me to slow down. To rest. To press into healing and comfort. To really give my body, mind, soul, and heart that beat of non-production without shame and condemnation. I do Winter now because I know the value in rest. I know my worth is in Jesus and it can never be taken away. I know to press into restfulness is to say yes to the even better production when it’s time. There’s a season for all things. (Ecclesiastes 3: 2-8 see below for the full verse)

Sometimes you’re meant to bear fruit, sometimes while it seems like you’re dead, done, over; A new horizon and a new hope are brewing within you. A new you is being developed in the depths of your challenges, pain, and suffering. All the things you’ve been through will have a meaning someday! There’s a new version of you coming to fruition, don’t give up on yourself and in the faith that you once had in God and your life. You are here on purpose! Your life has meaning and just because you’re in a season of waiting, darkness, cold, doesn’t mean you’re done. Something is happening and God is working in you and on your behalf! So when the time comes; You’ll bloom in a way that will take your breath away. God is ministering to your heart as we speak. This season of Winter is crucial for your character. And you are worth finding rest and peace, my beloved friend. Winter is a season for a reason. Take heart, you are loved and belong. You’ have made it this far and that means God isn’t done with you yet.

“There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.”

ecclesiastes 3: 3-8
